What is Trauma-Informed Care?

Trauma-Informed Care is a new initiative led by DDA Health Initiative at Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development-University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (GUCCHD-UCEDD). This initiative provides training and technical assistance on trauma care to service agencies that serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

GUCCHD-UCEDD is providing an individualized approach to key service providers associated with the DC Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) to build their capacity to provide trauma-informed services and support. The objective of this project is to build a network of leaders who want to ensure their organizations are equipped at the policy and practice levels to meet trauma-care needs.

GUCCHD’s DDA Health Initiative project is currently working with nine (9) service provider organizations to:

  1. Develop plans to build trauma-care capacity.
  2. Provide individual coaching and mentoring in establishing a trauma-informed care system.
  3. Support leaders in creating and enhancing effective therapeutic support that promote healing and resilience for people they serve and their staff.
  4. Develop organizational policies and practices that implement trauma care in their system of care delivery.
